🚨 2021 Tesla Model X: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Model X uses a column-mounted monostable (self-centering) electronic stalk on the right side of the steering wheel that returns to center after gear selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks before beginning
- Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal - if the 12V battery has any charge, the vehicle may power up enough to shift
- If the touchscreen powers on, press the brake pedal firmly and use the gear stalk (push up for Reverse, push down for Drive, press the button on the end for Park release)
- If completely dead with no 12V power: Access the front trunk (frunk) manually by connecting a 12V power source to the external jump-start terminals located behind the tow eye cover in the front bumper (driver's side)
- Remove the tow eye cover by pulling firmly, connect positive to the red terminal and negative to the black terminal or ground point
- Once 12V power is supplied, the vehicle should power on enough to allow normal gear stalk operation
- With power restored, press brake pedal, use gear stalk to select neutral by pushing up once briefly (into Reverse position) then immediately pulling down once briefly
- Alternative: Enable Transport Mode through the touchscreen (Service menu) which locks the vehicle in neutral for towing - this requires functional 12V power
Shift-lock override location
There is no mechanical shift-lock override on Tesla Model X; all shifting requires 12V electrical power to the vehicle computer systems
With zero electrical power
With absolutely zero 12V power, you cannot shift a Model X. You must provide external 12V power through the jump-start terminals behind the front tow eye cover (driver's side front bumper) to restore basic vehicle functions. Once powered, the electronic gear selector will function normally. Without this, the vehicle must be dragged onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground or on dollies.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Model X must be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels OFF the ground, or with all wheels on dollies. NEVER tow with any wheels on the ground except in Transport Mode (which requires working 12V power). Towing with wheels on the ground will cause permanent damage to the electric drive units. If using Transport Mode for towing, maximum speed is 3 mph for 33 feet - this is only for short positioning movements, NOT for towing to a destination.
