🚨 2023 Tesla Model X: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Model X uses a touchscreen gear selector on the center display as primary control, with physical backup buttons on the overhead console for Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Park.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks before beginning
  2. Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal - if the 12V lithium battery has any charge, the vehicle may power up
  3. If touchscreen powers on: Press and hold the brake pedal, then swipe the car icon on the touchscreen to select Neutral
  4. If touchscreen is unresponsive but vehicle has some power: Press the brake pedal and use the physical gear selector buttons on the overhead console - press the Neutral button
  5. If completely dead with no 12V power: Access the front trunk manually by connecting a 12V external power source to the jump-start terminals behind the tow eye cover in the front bumper (driver's side)
  6. Remove the tow eye cover, connect positive (red) to positive terminal and negative (black) to negative terminal or ground point
  7. Once external 12V power is connected, vehicle systems should initialize - you'll see the touchscreen power on
  8. With power restored: Press brake pedal and use either touchscreen or overhead console buttons to select Neutral
  9. For towing: Access Service mode on touchscreen and enable Transport Mode (requires working 12V power) to lock vehicle in neutral with parking brake released
Shift-lock override location
There is no mechanical shift-lock override; the 2023 Model X relies entirely on electronic controls with the overhead console buttons serving as the physical backup when the touchscreen is unavailable, but all methods require 12V power
With zero electrical power
With complete 12V power loss, the 2023 Model X cannot be shifted by any method. External 12V power must be supplied through the jump-start terminals located behind the front tow eye cover (driver's side of front bumper). Connect a jump pack or another 12V source, wait for the vehicle to initialize (touchscreen will light up), then use either touchscreen or overhead buttons to shift. Without external power, the vehicle cannot be shifted and must be winched onto a flatbed.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Model X must ONLY be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground or on dollies. NEVER tow with wheels touching the ground unless Transport Mode is properly engaged (requires functional 12V power and touchscreen access). Towing with wheels down without Transport Mode will cause catastrophic damage to the electric drive units. Even in Transport Mode, movement is limited to 3 mph for maximum 33 feet for positioning only - NOT for actual towing distances.
