🚨 2024 Tesla Model X: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 Model X uses a touchscreen gear selector on the center display as the primary method, with physical backup buttons on the overhead console for Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Park.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks before beginning
- Press the brake pedal to attempt to wake the vehicle - if the 12V lithium battery has sufficient charge, the vehicle will power on
- If touchscreen is operational: Press and hold the brake pedal firmly, swipe or tap the car icon on the touchscreen to select Neutral
- If touchscreen is unresponsive but vehicle has partial power: Use the physical backup buttons on the overhead console - press brake pedal and press the Neutral button (marked with 'N')
- If vehicle is completely dead with no 12V power: You must supply external 12V power through the jump-start terminals located behind the tow eye cover on the driver's side of the front bumper
- Remove the tow eye cover by pulling it from the bumper, connect a 12V jump pack or donor vehicle - positive (red) to red terminal, negative (black) to black terminal
- Wait 1-2 minutes after connecting external power for vehicle systems to initialize - the touchscreen should power on
- Once powered: Press the brake pedal and select Neutral using either the touchscreen or the overhead console Neutral button
- For towing preparation: With working 12V power, access the Service menu on the touchscreen and enable Transport Mode to lock the vehicle in neutral and release the parking brake
Shift-lock override location
There is no mechanical shift-lock override on the 2024 Model X; all shifting methods (touchscreen, overhead buttons) require 12V electrical power to operate the electronic drive system and vehicle computers
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, there is no way to shift the 2024 Model X. You must connect external 12V power to the jump-start terminals behind the tow eye cover (driver's side front bumper). Use a portable jump starter or another 12V source. After connection and system initialization, the touchscreen and overhead buttons will function for gear selection. If external power is unavailable, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed using a winch with wheels locked in Park.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Model X must be transported ONLY on a flatbed with all four wheels completely off the ground or on wheel dollies. NEVER tow this vehicle with any wheels on the pavement except in Transport Mode, and even then only for minimal positioning (3 mph maximum, 33 feet maximum distance). Towing with wheels on the ground will destroy the electric motors and drive units, resulting in extremely expensive repairs. Transport Mode requires working 12V power and is NOT suitable for long-distance towing.
