🚨 2025 Tesla Model X: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Model X uses a touchscreen-based gear selector on the center display as the primary control, with physical backup buttons located on the overhead console for Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Park.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks before beginning
  2. Press the brake pedal to attempt to wake the vehicle - if 12V power is available, the vehicle systems will initialize
  3. If the touchscreen is functional: Press and hold the brake pedal, then use the touchscreen to swipe or select Neutral from the gear display
  4. If the touchscreen is non-responsive but vehicle has some power: Press the brake pedal and use the physical Neutral button on the overhead console (center of headliner)
  5. If the vehicle is completely dead (no 12V power): You must provide external 12V power via the jump-start terminals behind the tow eye cover in the front bumper on the driver's side
  6. Remove the tow eye cover from the front bumper by pulling it off, then connect an external 12V power source - positive to red terminal, negative to black terminal or chassis ground
  7. After connecting external power, wait 1-2 minutes for the vehicle computer to boot and the touchscreen to activate
  8. Once the vehicle has power: Press the brake pedal firmly and select Neutral using either the touchscreen gear selector or the physical Neutral button on the overhead console
  9. For towing setup: With functional 12V power and touchscreen access, navigate to Service mode and enable Transport Mode, which places the vehicle in neutral and releases the electronic parking brake
Shift-lock override location
There is no mechanical shift-lock override mechanism; the 2025 Model X is fully electronic and requires 12V power for all gear selection methods including both the touchscreen and the overhead physical buttons
With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead, the 2025 Model X cannot be shifted without external power. You must connect an external 12V source (jump pack or donor vehicle) to the jump-start terminals located behind the tow eye cover on the driver's side of the front bumper. After connecting power and allowing the system to boot, normal gear selection will be available via touchscreen or overhead buttons. Without external power, the vehicle remains locked in Park and must be winched onto a flatbed.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The 2025 Model X must be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels OFF the ground or on wheel dollies. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground unless Transport Mode is properly activated (which requires working 12V power). Towing with wheels down will cause catastrophic and irreparable damage to the electric drive motors and inverters. Transport Mode is intended only for positioning the vehicle at low speed (3 mph maximum) for very short distances (33 feet maximum) - it is NOT for towing to a repair facility or home.
