🚨 2026 Tesla Model X: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Model X uses a column-mounted stalk (or touchscreen gear selector depending on production date) with electronic shift-by-wire control and no mechanical park pawl release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked - Tesla EVs have no traditional park pawl override accessible to consumers.
  2. Attempt to power the 12V system: open the front trunk (frunk) manually using the external jump-start posts under the tow eye cover on the front bumper - connect an external 12V power source (jump pack or another vehicle) to these posts.
  3. Once 12V power is restored, sit in the driver's seat and press the brake pedal.
  4. Use the gear selector (stalk or screen) to shift to Neutral.
  5. If 12V power cannot be restored, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with wheel dollies or a proper EV skate - do NOT attempt to override the parking pawl mechanically.
  6. For flatbed loading without power: use the manual frunk release (pull tab behind the tow eye cover after removing it), then jump the 12V system as described to enable Neutral, OR have the flatbed operator use wheel dollies under all four wheels.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, there is no consumer-accessible mechanical park pawl override. You must either restore 12V power via the external jump posts in the front bumper area (behind the tow eye cover) to electronically shift to Neutral, or the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed using wheel dollies under all four wheels. Tesla does not provide a mechanical shift lock override like conventional vehicles.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Tesla Model X is ALL-WHEEL DRIVE with permanent magnet motors. Towing with any wheels on the ground will cause severe motor and inverter damage due to back-EMF generation. FLATBED TRANSPORT ONLY. If the vehicle must be moved without power and cannot be shifted to Neutral, use wheel dollies under all four wheels on the flatbed.
