🚨 2025 Tesla Model Y: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 Model Y continues with the center console stalk-style electronic shifter (monostable lever) with Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive - some late 2025 models may transition to touchscreen-only shifting.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks - the electronic parking brake may not be engaged if 12V power is completely dead.
- If the 12V battery has ANY residual power, sit in the driver's seat and press the brake pedal.
- With brake applied, move the drive stalk up and hold for 1-2 seconds to select Neutral - the instrument cluster should display 'N'.
- If your 2025 Model Y has touchscreen-only shifting (no stalk): swipe up from the bottom of the touchscreen to access the drive mode selector, then tap 'N' for Neutral while pressing the brake.
- If the 12V system is completely dead and the touchscreen is black, you must restore 12V power first - access the low-voltage battery terminals under the front trunk (frunk) maintenance panel.
- Use an external 12V power source (jump box or another vehicle) connected to the positive and negative jump points under the frunk hood to restore minimal 12V power.
- Once 12V power is restored, press the brake pedal and shift to Neutral using the stalk or touchscreen method.
- For towing/flatbed loading with no ability to restore power: the vehicle must be placed in Transport Mode or towed on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground - DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground without power.
- To enable Transport Mode (if 12V is working): on the touchscreen, tap Controls > Service > Towing, then tap Transport Mode and follow on-screen instructions.
- Transport Mode disables the parking brake electronically and allows the vehicle to roll freely - this is the ONLY safe method for flatbed loading when the vehicle has power.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, there is no mechanical shift-lock override - you MUST restore 12V power via the jump points under the frunk to operate the shifter. Access the frunk by using the external manual release: pull the tow eye cover (front bumper, driver side) and connect 12V power to the two wires behind it to pop the frunk, then access the main jump terminals.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
WARNING: Tesla Model Y MUST be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels OFF the ground. Towing with wheels on pavement (even in Neutral) will cause severe damage to the electric drive system. If the 12V battery is dead and cannot be restored, the vehicle cannot be shifted to Neutral - use wheel dollies or a flatbed. The high-voltage system is separate from the 12V system; a dead 12V battery does not mean the HV battery is safe to approach - always assume HV system is live.
