🚨 2022 Toyota Aqua: Emergency Neutral
The 2022 Toyota Aqua (second generation, 2021+) uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with a sequential gate for Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and B (engine braking) positions.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is set
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON or press the power button twice without pressing the brake pedal (READY light should NOT come on)
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Move the shifter to Neutral position (push forward once from Park)
- If the shifter will not move due to shift interlock failure, locate the shift lock override button
- The override is accessed by carefully prying up the small rectangular trim panel on the left side of the shifter base (marked with an icon or the word 'SHIFT LOCK')
- Using a flathead screwdriver or similar tool, press down firmly on the white shift lock release button while pressing the brake pedal
- While holding the override button down, move the shifter forward into Neutral
- Release parking brake if functional, vehicle can now be moved
Shift-lock override location
Under a small rectangular trim panel on the left side of the shifter base, marked with 'SHIFT LOCK' text or icon - panel pries up to reveal white override button
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power: The shift lock override will mechanically release the shifter to allow movement to Neutral even without battery power. Pry up the shift lock panel and press the override button while moving the shifter to Neutral. The parking brake on the Aqua is typically a manual foot pedal or hand lever (depending on market) and can be released mechanically without power. If equipped with electronic parking brake, it cannot be released without 12V power and vehicle will need to be placed in neutral, then dragged onto flatbed.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: While in Neutral with the hybrid system off, the vehicle can be towed at low speeds for short distances (under 50 km at under 50 km/h per Toyota guidelines). However, flatbed transport is always the safest method. DO NOT attempt to tow if the hybrid system cannot be properly shut down or if you're unsure of the system state. For long-distance transport, always use a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
