⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ON or ACCESSORY mode using the power button (without pressing the brake pedal if the 12V battery has charge)
- Press and hold the N (Neutral) button on the shift panel for approximately 2 seconds
- If the hybrid system will not power on due to depleted 12V battery, you must jump-start the 12V battery or connect an external power source to access the shift controls
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved; verify the shift indicator shows N before attempting to roll
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter cannot be operated. You must either jump-start the 12V battery using the underhood jump points or connect a portable jump starter. The Aqua does not have a mechanical shift-lock override button due to its electronic shift-by-wire design. Once minimal 12V power is restored, you can cycle the power button to ACCESSORY and engage Neutral.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Aqua is a hybrid vehicle. For flatbed towing, all four wheels must be OFF the ground or the rear wheels must be on dollies. Towing with front wheels on the ground and rear wheels rolling can cause serious damage to the hybrid transaxle and electric motor components. If moving under its own weight in Neutral for loading, limit distance to the absolute minimum (a few feet onto the flatbed). Never tow this vehicle for any distance with wheels on the ground.
