🚨 1997 Toyota Aristo: Emergency Neutral
The 1997 Aristo (JZS160/161 series) uses a traditional column-mounted or console-mounted automatic transmission lever with a mechanical shift-lock release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small covered slot near the base of the shifter (console shifter) or on the shifter housing (column shifter)
- Remove the small plastic cap covering the shift-lock override slot
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if you have power) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If you have no power, continue holding the override down and physically move the shifter to Neutral (it may require firm pressure)
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and verify the vehicle can roll before loading
Shift-lock override location
The shift-lock override is typically located near the shifter base on console-shift models, usually on the left or right side under a small rectangular plastic cap. On column-shift models (less common on the Aristo), check the right side of the shifter housing near where it meets the column.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock solenoid may still prevent shifter movement. Use the mechanical shift-lock override as described above. The override mechanically bypasses the shift-lock solenoid, allowing you to physically move the shifter to Neutral without any electrical power. You may need to apply significant force to move the shifter once the override is depressed.
