🚨 1998 Toyota Aristo: Emergency Neutral

The 1998 Toyota Aristo (JDM equivalent of Lexus GS) uses a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot, which is a small rectangular opening typically covered by a removable cap near the shifter base on the right side.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal end of the key to pry off the small cover cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and pulling the shifter out of Park.
  6. If no electrical power is available, applying downward pressure in the override slot should mechanically release the shift lock mechanism, allowing the shifter to move to Neutral without brake pedal or ignition power.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the right side of the shifter base on the center console, typically marked with a small icon or located adjacent to the shifter button.
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the mechanical shift lock override can still be depressed with a tool in the override slot. No ignition position or brake pedal function is required—the override mechanically releases the shift gate lock. Ensure parking brake is set before attempting.
