🚨 2015 Toyota Avalon: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 Avalon Hybrid uses a conventional console-mounted PRNDL shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any remaining charge (this may allow normal shifter operation)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap cover, positioned directly forward and to the left of the shifter base on the console
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot
  5. Fully depress the brake pedal with your left foot
  6. Insert the key blade or a small flathead screwdriver straight down into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  8. Keep your foot on the brake until the vehicle is secured

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid system cannot power on and the shifter may remain locked even with override use. The shift lock override is mechanical and should work, but the transmission parking pawl may not release without any electrical power to the transmission control module. If the override does not free the shifter, the vehicle must be flatbedded or the 12V battery must be jump-started temporarily to release the shift lock.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
Avalon Hybrid has no separate tow mode. If the hybrid system is operational but you cannot shift, forcing the vehicle into Neutral with the override will allow towing. However, Toyota specifies flatbed or dolly (front wheels up) towing only - never tow with front wheels on the ground as the transaxle will be damaged even in Neutral. Maximum dolly tow distance with rear wheels down is 50 miles at 35 mph or less.
