🚨 2026 Toyota C-HR: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 C-HR hybrid uses an electronic shift-by-wire console-mounted selector with Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and B-mode positions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
  2. If you have 12V power: Press the brake pedal, press the Power button twice without pressing the brake to enter Accessory mode, then press it once more while holding the brake to enter Ready mode.
  3. With the system in Ready mode, press the brake and move the shifter to Neutral.
  4. If the 12V battery is completely dead: The electronic shifter will not function. You must jump-start the 12V battery or connect an external 12V power source to the battery terminals under the hood before the shifter can be operated.
  5. Once 12V power is restored, follow the Ready-mode procedure above to shift to Neutral.
  6. WARNING: If the hybrid system cannot enter Ready mode due to high-voltage battery issues, the vehicle CANNOT be safely shifted to Neutral and MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
  7. Do NOT tow this hybrid with any wheels on the ground unless it is confirmed to be in Neutral with the hybrid system Ready, as doing so will cause severe damage to the transaxle and electric motors.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-by-wire system is completely inoperable. The vehicle cannot be shifted out of Park without restoring 12V power via jump-start or battery replacement. There is no mechanical shift lock override on this electronic shifter. Once 12V power is available, the shifter will function if the hybrid system can enter Ready mode.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This hybrid vehicle must ONLY be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground if the hybrid system cannot enter Ready mode or if Neutral cannot be engaged. Towing with drive wheels on the ground will spin the electric motors and cause catastrophic damage to the hybrid transaxle. Even in Neutral, extended towing is not recommended.
