The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this may restore power to the shift lock solenoid).
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override slot—it is typically a small rectangular opening near the base of the shifter, often covered by a removable trim piece or cap.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key itself to remove any cover over the override slot.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and the shifter button.
- Move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the vehicle must be moved without starting, keep the parking brake engaged until ready to roll or load.
