🚨 1992 Toyota Camry: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Camry uses a conventional floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical push-button release on the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this may restore power to the shift lock solenoid).
  3. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override slot—it is typically a small rectangular opening near the base of the shifter, often covered by a removable trim piece or cap.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key itself to remove any cover over the override slot.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and the shifter button.
  6. Move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle must be moved without starting, keep the parking brake engaged until ready to roll or load.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot near the shifter base, usually on the right side or front of the shifter console, often covered by a small plastic cap or trim piece.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock may default to the unlocked position on this older mechanical system. Try the normal shifter button while pressing firmly—many 1992 Camrys will release mechanically. If still locked, use the override slot as described. The ignition key does not need to be turned if the mechanical override is used.
