🚨 2004 Toyota Camry: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 Camry (XV30 generation, 2002-2006) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with an electronic shift lock and a push-button release on the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has enough charge (this energizes the shift lock solenoid).
  3. Press the brake pedal and attempt to shift normally.
  4. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override—there is a small covered slot on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side), just forward of the shifter lever.
  5. Use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the small rectangular plastic cover (approximately 1 inch long).
  6. Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and push down firmly.
  7. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  8. Replace the cover after shifting.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular plastic cover on the left side (driver's side) of the shifter base, just forward of the shifter lever. The override release mechanism is directly beneath this cover.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery and ignition off, the shift lock solenoid should be de-energized and may allow shifting with just the mechanical override. You do not need ignition power to use the override slot. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot, push down, and shift to Neutral while pressing the shifter button. If the shifter is still locked, ensure you are pressing down firmly in the override slot—the mechanism requires solid pressure.
