The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has enough charge (this energizes the shift lock solenoid).
- Press the brake pedal and attempt to shift normally.
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override—there is a small covered slot on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side), just forward of the shifter lever.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the small rectangular plastic cover (approximately 1 inch long).
- Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and push down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- Replace the cover after shifting.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery and ignition off, the shift lock solenoid should be de-energized and may allow shifting with just the mechanical override. You do not need ignition power to use the override slot. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot, push down, and shift to Neutral while pressing the shifter button. If the shifter is still locked, ensure you are pressing down firmly in the override slot—the mechanism requires solid pressure.
