🚨 2009 Toyota Camry: Emergency Neutral
The 2009 Camry Hybrid (XV40 generation) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with an electronic shift-by-wire system and a release button on the shifter.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Ensure the 12V auxiliary battery has at least some charge—if completely dead, you must jump-start the 12V battery first (located in the trunk on driver side)
- Press the brake pedal and push the Power button twice without pressing the brake to reach ACC mode, or insert the key fob in the slot if equipped and turn to ACC
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it's a small rectangular covered opening on the left side of the shifter base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key blade to remove the cap covering the override slot
- Insert the tool into the slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral
- Do NOT attempt to shift to any drive position without the hybrid system ready—this can cause damage

With zero electrical power
The Camry Hybrid requires at least minimal 12V power to release the shift lock, even with the override. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you MUST jump-start it first (battery is in the trunk, driver side). The override slot may not function without any electrical power due to the electronic shifter system.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: The Camry Hybrid should only be towed with all wheels OFF the ground (flatbed or trailer). If you must roll it a short distance for loading, ensure the Power mode is in ACC or ON (not READY), the hybrid system is NOT engaged, and never exceed a few feet at walking speed. Towing with wheels on the ground can severely damage the hybrid transaxle. Do not attempt to put the vehicle in any drive mode without the READY indicator lit.
