🚨 2021 Toyota Camry: Emergency Neutral

The 2021 Camry Hybrid uses a conventional PRNDL console-mounted shifter lever with an electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap, positioned directly to the left of the shifter base on the console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the override cap.
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or small tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If no brake power assist, apply maximum force to brake pedal while performing the override.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. Insert tool into override slot and press down while physically moving the shifter to Neutral. You will need significant force on the brake pedal as there will be no power assist. The hybrid system will not be active, but the mechanical override bypasses the electronic shift lock.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CAUTION: This vehicle must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground, as the hybrid transaxle does not have a traditional neutral and the electric motors are mechanically connected to the wheels. Towing with wheels down will generate electricity and cause severe damage to the hybrid system. Ensure the vehicle is in 'N' only for loading purposes.
