🚨 2005 Toyota Celica: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 Celica uses a traditional console-mounted P-R-N-D-2-L automatic shifter with mechanical shift lock tied to the brake-light circuit.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Insert the key and turn the ignition to ON (or ACC if battery is weak).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Locate the shift lock override: there is a small rectangular cover directly to the left of the shifter base, on the console side.
  5. Pry off the cover with a flathead screwdriver or fingernail.
  6. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed slot and press down firmly.
  7. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  8. Release the override tool; the shifter will remain in Neutral.

With zero electrical power
The 2005 Celica shift lock is mechanical/solenoid-based but requires ignition power to release normally. With a completely dead battery, use the shift lock override slot as described—the mechanical override works without power. If the steering lock is engaged and you cannot turn the key to ON, you may still access the override slot, but steering will remain locked.
