🚨 2001 Toyota Chaser: Emergency Neutral

The X100 Chaser (1996-2001) uses a traditional column-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power available (this may release the shift lock automatically if the issue is brake-switch related).
  3. If no power or the lock remains engaged, locate the shift lock override cover on the steering column shroud, typically a small rectangular cap near the base of the shifter lever.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you to move it out of Park.
  6. Shift through Reverse to Neutral. Keep your foot on the brake if power is available.
  7. If the vehicle must be towed, ensure it is in Neutral and verify the steering lock is disengaged (key in ACC position at minimum).
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular override cover on the steering column shroud near the shifter base; exact position varies but is typically on the right side or below the lever mount.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the steering lock will engage when the key is removed. Leave the key in the ACC position to keep steering unlocked. The shift lock override is purely mechanical and will work without power. You may need to manually unlock the steering by turning the wheel slightly while turning the key.
