The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is firmly applied
- Attempt to turn ignition to ACC or ON position to provide power to shift lock system
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override—look for a small rectangular or square cover panel on the left side or front-left corner of the shifter base console
- Pry off the override cover using a flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade
- Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the exposed override slot
- While pressing down on the override release, move the shifter from P to N
- Remove the tool and confirm shifter stays in N position
- Keep ignition in ACC to prevent steering lock during vehicle movement

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift lock will not function even with the override tool. You must jump-start the 12V auxiliary battery (under hood, driver side) to restore minimal electrical power. Once you have ACC power, immediately use the override procedure. The hybrid system does not need to be in Ready mode.
