🚨 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid uses an electronic shift-by-wire system with a console-mounted monostable lever (returns to center after each input).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the vehicle's power button to turn the hybrid system to ON mode (if 12V battery has sufficient charge)
- Move the shift lever to N (neutral) position by pulling the lever rearward one position from P
- If the hybrid system cannot be activated due to low 12V battery, use the shift-lock override: locate the small rectangular cover on the left side of the shifter base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the shift-lock override cover
- While holding the brake pedal, press and hold the shift-lock override button down fully
- While holding the override button, move the shift lever rearward to N
- Release the override button and verify the transmission indicator shows N

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter may not respond even with the override button. You may need to provide a jump-start or external 12V power to the vehicle to energize the shift-by-wire system enough to select neutral. Once in neutral with power connected, the vehicle can roll freely. Disconnect power before loading if necessary.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING: Even in neutral, the hybrid system may engage when the vehicle is moved or if the 12V system has power. For flatbed towing, ALL FOUR WHEELS MUST BE OFF THE GROUND. Do not tow this vehicle with any wheels on the ground for any distance, as the electric motor/generator is mechanically connected to the front wheels and will be forcibly rotated, potentially causing severe damage to the hybrid transaxle and inverter. If using a wheel-lift, ensure the front wheels are lifted and use dollies under the rear wheels.
