⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or securely chocked.
- Turn the ignition to ON (press START button twice without pressing brake, or turn key to ON position).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shift-lock override button (small rectangular cap/slot near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side toward the driver) using a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool.
- While holding the override button down, move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the vehicle must be moved with no electrical power, see noPowerNotes below.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap/slot located at the base of the shifter assembly on the left side (driver's side); pry off the cap to access the override button underneath.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery and no way to restore power: (1) Use the mechanical key to unlock the driver's door. (2) Access the shift-lock override slot at the shifter base (see overrideLocation). (3) Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly. (4) While holding the override down, manually move the shifter to Neutral. Note: the hybrid system will not be active, but the transmission will mechanically release. (5) The vehicle can then be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: The Corolla Hybrid has a high-voltage battery system. If the 12V battery is dead, the hybrid drive system will not engage, but the transmission can still be shifted. DO NOT attempt to tow this vehicle with drive wheels on the ground for any distance—flatbed or trailer towing ONLY. Towing with wheels down can severely damage the hybrid transaxle and electric motors. If you must roll the vehicle a few feet (e.g., onto a flatbed), Neutral is safe, but prolonged towing on the ground is prohibited.
