🚨 2002 Toyota Corolla: Emergency Neutral
The 2002 Corolla uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock that prevents shifting out of Park without pressing the brake pedal.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position indicator
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar thin tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- Remove the tool and replace the cap when done

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override is your only option. The override is purely mechanical and works without any battery power. You may need a flashlight to locate the override slot in low light conditions.
