🚨 2003 Toyota Corolla: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 Corolla (E120 generation) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock that prevents shifting out of Park without pressing the brake pedal.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override—it is a small rectangular slot covered by a plastic cap on the console trim to the left of the shifter lever, forward of the cup holder area
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override access
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override pressed, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. Remove the tool and replace the access cap

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and functions without any electrical power. With a completely dead battery, this override is your only method to shift out of Park. Use a flashlight if needed to locate the override access point.
