🚨 2020 Toyota Corolla: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 Corolla Hybrid uses a floor-mounted electronic shifter with shift-by-wire technology and electronic shift lock controlled by the hybrid system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly
- If the hybrid system has any power, press the Power button twice without touching the brake pedal to enter Accessory mode
- Locate the shift lock override access—it is a small rectangular slot with a removable cover on the left side of the shifter base, just forward of the cup holders
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override access cover
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to Neutral position—note that the shifter is electronic and may require pressing the release button on the shifter itself
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, the hybrid system will not power up—proceed with override method and manually push the vehicle or load onto flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V battery power, the hybrid system cannot initialize and the electronic shifter has very limited function. Use the mechanical shift lock override to release the shifter mechanism. The hybrid transaxle park pawl will release when you access the override. However, the electronic parking brake may not release without power—in this case, you must load the vehicle onto a flatbed; do not attempt to tow it with wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The 2020 Corolla Hybrid must be transported on a flatbed truck only. Never flat-tow or dolly-tow with any wheels on the ground, as the electric motors in the transaxle will generate voltage when rotated, potentially causing severe damage to the hybrid system electronics. If the electronic parking brake will not release due to dead battery, the vehicle must be winched onto the flatbed—the rear wheels can be dragged only for the short distance onto the truck bed.
