The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Turn the ignition to ON (or press the power button twice without brake pedal) to energize the shift lock system.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shift lock override button while holding the brake, then move the shifter from P to N.
- If the battery is completely dead and the override button doesn't work, you must jump-start the 12V battery or connect an external power source to energize the shift lock solenoid.
- Once in Neutral, release the parking brake only when ready to move the vehicle.
Shift-lock override location
The shift lock override button is a small square button located on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position, typically behind or integrated with a small trim panel.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift lock cannot be overridden mechanically on this model. You must provide external 12V power (jumper pack or jump-start) to energize the system enough to release the shifter. The hybrid system does not need to be 'Ready,' but the 12V accessory circuits must have power.

The Corolla Hybrid has no mechanical transmission park pawl that can roll; the transmission park is electronically controlled. If towing with front wheels on the ground while NOT in Neutral, you risk damaging the hybrid transaxle. For distances over 50 feet or if you cannot confirm Neutral engagement, use a flatbed or tow dolly with front wheels off the ground. Do NOT tow in 'Ready' mode—key off, Neutral only.
