🚨 2026 Toyota Corolla: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Corolla Hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shift lever with a linear gate (P-R-N-D-B) and push-button P.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small covered opening on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small rectangular cover cap
  6. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while continuing to hold the brake
  7. While holding the override down, move the shift lever from P to N
  8. Release the override tool and verify the shifter remains in N
  9. Vehicle can now be moved or pushed; ensure ignition remains in ACC or ON to allow steering wheel to unlock
Shift-lock override location
Small covered rectangular slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the console trim—cover pries off with a flathead screwdriver or key blade
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not release even with the override—you must jump-start the 12V battery (located in engine bay) to get any power to the shift lock system, then immediately use the override procedure. The hybrid system does not need to be 'Ready'; ACC power is sufficient.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a hybrid—the gasoline engine may start unexpectedly if the hybrid system activates. Never flat-tow this vehicle with driving wheels on the ground; transaxle damage will occur. Use flatbed or dolly under front wheels only. Ensure vehicle is in N and ignition in ACC (not OFF) during loading to prevent steering lock.
