🚨 2000 Toyota Echo: Emergency Neutral

The 2000 Toyota Echo uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock controlled by the brake pedal interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it's a small covered opening on the right side of the shifter housing on the column, just behind the shifter lever.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key firmly into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If the car needs to roll, you can shift to Neutral; for towing, ensure the shifter is in Neutral.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. You do NOT need any electrical power to use the override - simply remove the cap and press the override while shifting. The key does not need to turn if the battery is completely dead.
