🚨 2012 Toyota Highlander: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Highlander Hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with shift-by-wire technology and an electronic parking brake.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and chock all wheels - this generation has an electronic parking brake that may not hold without power.
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON or press the power button twice without pressing the brake pedal (if any battery power remains).
  3. Locate the shift lock override: remove the small rectangular plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base (near the driver's side). You may need to pry gently with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
  4. With the cover removed, insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override down, press the shifter button (if present) and move the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If completely dead, you may need a jump start or external 12V power to activate the hybrid system enough to shift - see noPowerNotes below.

With zero electrical power
The 2012 Highlander Hybrid's shift-by-wire system may require some 12V power to the vehicle electronics. If completely dead, connect a jump box or jumper cables to provide minimal power to the 12V battery (located under the hood), then use the shift lock override. Do NOT attempt to jump-start the hybrid system - only provide enough 12V power to release the shifter. The hybrid battery itself does not need to be active.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a hybrid vehicle. Before towing, you MUST ensure the vehicle is in Neutral through the proper procedure above. The Highlander Hybrid can be flat-towed on a flatbed ONLY - never tow with any wheels on the ground, as the electric motors are connected to the drivetrain and will be damaged. Even in Neutral, the front wheels should not touch the ground during towing. Always use a flatbed or trailer. If the 12V battery is dead and cannot be jumped, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the wheels not rotating (using dollies or winching).
