🚨 2018 Toyota Highlander: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 Highlander Hybrid uses a conventional console-mounted PRNDL lever shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available (power is needed for the shift lock release).
  3. Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Locate the shift lock override cover—a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, near where the lever enters the console.
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover.
  6. Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you out of Park.
  7. Shift to Neutral and verify the vehicle can roll freely (test gently).

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override will still function mechanically—follow the override procedure above. However, the hybrid system will not power on, and the parking pawl remains the primary hold. The mechanical override releases only the shift lock, not the transmission itself; you may need to rock the vehicle gently while applying the override if the pawl is under load. For completely dead scenarios, a jump start or external 12V source to the battery may be necessary to fully release the transmission electronics.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
IMPORTANT: The Highlander Hybrid has no true 'tow mode' and the hybrid transaxle can be damaged by towing with drive wheels on the ground. Even in Neutral, the electric motors and planetary gearsets remain mechanically connected. FLATBED TOW ONLY—all four wheels must be off the ground, or use a wheel-lift with proper dollies on the rear wheels if front wheels are lifted. Do not tow with any drive wheels rolling for any distance.
