🚨 2020 Toyota Highlander: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 Highlander Hybrid (fourth generation, redesigned) uses an electronic shift-by-wire console shifter with a conventional PRNDL-style lever.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. If possible, connect a jump pack or external 12V power source to the battery—the 2020 redesigned Highlander's electronic shifter requires some electrical power to operate.
  3. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position (jump power may be required if battery is completely dead).
  4. Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal.
  5. Locate the shift lock override cover—a small rectangular or square cap on the console near the shifter base, typically to the left or front-left of the shifter lever.
  6. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover.
  7. Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter toward Neutral.
  8. Shift to Neutral and verify the vehicle can roll freely (test gently).
Shift-lock override location
Small cover near the shifter base on the console, typically to the left or front-left side of the lever—exact position may vary slightly; consult owner's manual if not immediately visible.
With zero electrical power
The 2020 Highlander Hybrid uses shift-by-wire, meaning the shifter is mostly electronic. With ZERO 12V power, the shift lock override may not fully function, and the transmission may remain locked in Park electronically. A jump start or external 12V supply is strongly recommended to provide minimal power to the shift control module. Even with the override, you may need to supply power to successfully shift out of Park. If completely dead and unable to jump, flatbed towing in Park may be the only option.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The 2020 Highlander Hybrid has no true 'tow mode' and the hybrid AWD transaxle can be severely damaged by towing with any wheels on the ground. Even in Neutral, the electric motors and complex planetary gearsets remain engaged. FLATBED TOW ONLY—all four wheels must be off the ground. Do not attempt to tow with drive wheels rolling under any circumstances, even for short distances.
