🚨 2021 Toyota Highlander: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Highlander Hybrid uses a traditional PRNDL console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift-lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to ON (push START button twice without brake pedal, or use physical key in slot if battery is dead).
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover cap, located on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of the console).
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot and push down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shift lever to Neutral.
- Release the override and replace the cap.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the hybrid system cannot energize. You must jump-start the 12V battery (located under the hood) to at least get ignition ON, or access the shift-lock override slot mechanically—the override is purely mechanical and does not require power. However, the transmission parking pawl on hybrids may not release easily without some 12V power to the system. If the 12V system is completely dead and the override does not free the shifter, you may need to jump the 12V battery minimally to release electronic locks.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: The Highlander Hybrid powertrain can move unexpectedly if the hybrid system is energized. Always ensure READY light is OFF before shifting to Neutral. For towing, consult the owner's manual for the tow-mode procedure (typically: ignition ON, shift to Neutral, then turn ignition OFF while holding Neutral for flatbed loading). NEVER tow a Highlander Hybrid with the front wheels on the ground for any distance—this will destroy the hybrid transaxle. Flatbed or trailer with all four wheels off the ground only.
