🚨 2026 Toyota Highlander: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Highlander Hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shift lever with an electronic parking brake.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and chock the wheels securely
- Locate the shift lock override slot—look for a small rectangular cover or cap near the base of the shifter, typically on the left or front side of the shifter housing
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap
- With the ignition in ACC mode (if 12V power is available), press firmly into the override slot with the screwdriver while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
- If moving to Neutral is successful, you can now release the electronic parking brake (if 12V power is available) by pulling and holding the EPB switch
- If the electronic parking brake cannot be released due to no power, the vehicle must be flatbedded—do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover near the shifter base on console, typically left or front side of shifter housing—exact location may vary by trim
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override may still work mechanically to release the shifter to Neutral, but the electronic parking brake will NOT release. The hybrid system will also not disengage. Vehicle MUST be flatbedded in this condition.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a hybrid vehicle. With no 12V power, the hybrid transaxle remains mechanically engaged even in Neutral. The electronic parking brake cannot be released without power. FLATBED TOW ONLY. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground or severe transaxle damage will occur. If 12V power can be restored (jump pack), you may be able to release EPB, but confirm all-wheel-drive status before towing—AWD models must be flatbedded regardless.
