🚨 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser: Emergency Neutral

The 1996 Land Cruiser (FJ80 series) uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift-lock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot on the column shroud near the base of the shifter - look for a small rectangular or round cap on the right side of the column near where the lever enters the shroud.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shift lever to Neutral.
  7. If the brake pedal cannot be pressed, maintain pressure on the override and use firm force to move the lever to Neutral - the override mechanically releases the shift lock.
Shift-lock override location
Small capped slot on the right side of the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever, approximately where the lever enters the column housing.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift-lock override is purely mechanical and will still function. Turn the key to ACC position mechanically (no power needed for the key cylinder), then use the override slot with a screwdriver to release the shifter. The mechanical override bypasses all electrical interlock systems.
