🚨 1992 Toyota Paseo: Emergency Neutral
The 1992 Paseo automatic uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical shift lock that prevents movement out of Park without the brake pedal pressed.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to the ON (II) position - this may require a jump-start if the battery is dead
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shifter from P to N
- If the shifter will not move (brake light switch failure or no power), locate the shift lock override slot
- The override slot is a small rectangular opening with a cover, located on the left side of the shifter console near the base of the shifter lever
- Remove the small plastic cover by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot
- Push down firmly on the tool while simultaneously moving the shifter from P to N
- You may need to press the shifter release button on the front of the shifter handle while doing this

With zero electrical power
The 1992 Paseo has a mechanical shift lock override that works without electrical power. With a completely dead battery, you will not be able to turn the ignition to ON, but the mechanical override still functions. Simply use the override slot as described - insert a tool, press down, and move the shifter to neutral. The brake lights will not function without power, but the mechanical override bypasses the electronic interlock entirely.
