🚨 2003 Toyota Prius: Emergency Neutral
The first-generation (NHW11) 2003 Prius uses a small electronic console-mounted shift lever with positions P-R-N-D-B, operating the eCVT transmission.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is set and wheels are chocked.
- If the 12V auxiliary battery has any charge, turn the ignition key to ON (do NOT press brake pedal or attempt READY mode).
- Press the shift lever button and attempt to move the shifter to N - if power is available to the shift-by-wire system, this may work.
- If the shifter will not release electrically, locate the shift lock override cover - a small removable plastic cap on the console near the base of the shifter.
- Remove the override cover and insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to the N position.
- DO NOT attempt to push or roll the vehicle with the drive wheels on the ground unless in proper tow mode - the eCVT can be damaged.
- For towing: with the shifter in N and the ignition in ACC or ON position (if possible), the vehicle may be towed SHORT distances at low speed with drive wheels down. For any significant distance or if no power is available, the drive wheels MUST be off the ground (flatbed or tow dolly).
- If absolutely no 12V power is available and the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed, you may need to use the shift override just before winching onto the bed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-by-wire system is completely non-functional and the electronic parking brake cannot be released. The mechanical shift lock override will allow moving the shifter to N, but this does NOT make the vehicle safe to roll under its own weight. The hybrid transaxle contains electronic components that can be damaged by unpowered rotation. Without 12V power, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with drive wheels off the ground. Use the shift override only to facilitate loading.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL HYBRID WARNING: The Prius eCVT transmission contains motor-generators that can be damaged if rotated without proper system control. Never tow this vehicle with the front (drive) wheels on the ground unless the hybrid system is in proper tow mode (N with ignition ON). Even with the shifter in N and no 12V power, internal components can generate voltage and cause damage. Always use a flatbed or tow dolly with front wheels raised. If the 12V battery is completely dead and cannot be jumped, flatbed transport is mandatory.
