🚨 2007 Toyota Prius: Emergency Neutral
The 2007 Prius (generation 2, NHW20) uses a compact electronic shift-by-wire lever on the center console with positions for P, R, N, D, and B.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if any 12V power is available (this allows the shift-lock solenoid to function normally).
- Press and hold the brake pedal fully.
- Move the shift lever from P to N by moving it forward and releasing (N is the middle detent position).
- If the brake-light switch has failed or the shift-lock will not release with the brake pedal pressed, locate the shift-lock override slot.
- The override slot is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable plastic cap, located on the left side of the shifter base near the P position.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cap.
- Insert the key or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shift lever from P toward N.
- Once in N, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled; release the override tool and replace the cap.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the shift-by-wire system will not function electronically. You MUST use the mechanical shift-lock override: remove the cap on the left side of the shifter base, insert a key or screwdriver into the slot, press down firmly, and move the shifter to N. The override provides mechanical release of the lock pawl. Without any power, the hybrid system cannot engage, so the vehicle is safe to roll once in N.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Prius is a hybrid and should NEVER be towed with the front wheels on the ground for more than minimal distances at low speed (consult owner's manual for limits, typically under 35 mph for short distances). The hybrid transaxle contains motor-generators that will spin and can be damaged or generate dangerous voltage if towed improperly. For any significant distance or if the hybrid system is faulted, the vehicle MUST be flatbedded or towed with the front wheels OFF the ground (dollies or flatbed only). If moving under its own power in N is not possible, call for a flatbed.
