🚨 2009 Toyota Prius: Emergency Neutral
The 2009 Prius (second generation, XW20) uses a console-mounted electronic shift lever that returns to center after each movement.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- If the 12V battery has any charge, turn the POWER button to ON mode (press without brake pedal) to energize the shift interlock.
- With the POWER on and brake pedal depressed, move the shift lever to N position (push forward from P).
- If the shift interlock will not release due to a failed brake light switch or depleted 12V battery, locate the shift lock override slot.
- The override slot is located under a small rectangular cap on the console directly to the right of the shift lever base.
- Pry off the cap with a flat tool (key, screwdriver, trim tool).
- Insert a small flat tool (screwdriver, key) into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shift lever forward to N.
- Keep the tool pressed while shifting; the lever should move freely to N with the override engaged.
- Once in N, remove the tool and replace the cap.
- The vehicle can now roll freely; ensure chocks and parking brake are set before releasing foot brake.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the POWER system will not engage. Use the shift lock override slot (right of shifter, under cap) with a screwdriver to manually release the shift lock and move to N. The hybrid system does NOT need to be on for the vehicle to roll in neutral, but the steering wheel will be locked and power steering will not function. A flatbed tow is strongly recommended.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a hybrid vehicle. If the high-voltage hybrid battery is functional and 12V power is available, the vehicle can briefly enter READY mode for normal shifting. However, with no 12V power or when towing, use ONLY neutral (N) and tow with all wheels on the ground for SHORT distances at low speed (under 35 mph, under 50 miles per Toyota). For any significant towing distance, use a flatbed or tow dolly with the front wheels OFF the ground. Do NOT tow in P or with the drive wheels on the ground at highway speeds—the electric motors are connected to the wheels and can generate dangerous voltage or suffer damage.
