🚨 2011 Toyota Prius: Emergency Neutral
The 2011 Prius (third generation, XW30) uses a console-mounted electronic shift-by-wire lever with a monostable design that returns to center position.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- If the 12V battery has any charge, press the POWER button to ACC or ON mode (without brake pedal if necessary) to energize the electronic shifter.
- With POWER on and brake pedal depressed, push the shift lever forward and hold briefly to engage N (Neutral).
- If the shift interlock will not release due to a failed brake light switch or weak 12V battery, locate the shift lock override.
- The shift lock override slot is located under a small rectangular plastic cap on the upper console trim to the right of the shift lever.
- Use a flat tool (key, small screwdriver, trim tool) to carefully pry off the cap.
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override tool down, push the shift lever forward to N position—it should move freely with the lock defeated.
- Once the lever is in N, release the override tool and replace the cap.
- The vehicle can now roll; maintain wheel chocks and parking brake until ready to move.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function normally. Use the shift lock override slot (right of shifter, under cap) to manually release the lock and move to N. The hybrid system will not activate without 12V power, so the steering lock will remain engaged and there will be no power steering or brake assist. Flatbed towing is the safest option.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a hybrid vehicle with an electronically controlled transmission. With no 12V power, only use the mechanical shift lock override to access neutral. Do NOT tow with the front (drive) wheels on the ground at highway speeds or for extended distances. Toyota specifies towing with front wheels OFF the ground (flatbed or dolly) or very limited flat-towing (under 35 mph for less than 50 miles). Towing improperly can spin the electric motors, generating high voltage at the inverter and potentially causing severe damage to hybrid components or creating an electrical hazard.
