🚨 2014 Toyota Prius: Emergency Neutral

The 2014 Prius (XW30 generation, final year) uses a console-mounted electronic shift lever with a push-button-style gate that moves through Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and B positions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and wheels are chocked - the parking brake may not hold without power
  2. Turn the ignition to ON (push start button twice without brake pedal, or use physical key in slot under steering column cover if dead 12V battery)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Move the shift lever to Neutral position by pushing it upward momentarily (it will spring back to center)
  5. If shift lever will not move due to shift lock, locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular cover directly to the left front of the shifter base on the console
  6. Pry up the shift lock override cover with a flat tool (screwdriver or key)
  7. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the exposed slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the brake and moving the shifter to Neutral
  8. With no 12V power at all: the shift lock override must be used as electronic shifter requires some power to register position; jump-start the 12V battery or connect a jump box to access any shifter function

With zero electrical power
The electronic shifter requires 12V power to function. With a completely dead 12V battery, you must jump-start the 12V battery (located in the trunk on passenger side) or connect a portable jump starter to the 12V battery to gain enough power to use the shift lock override and move the shifter. The hybrid system does not need to be READY, but the 12V system must have some power for the shifter electronics to register Neutral.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE: The Prius can roll freely in Neutral even with the hybrid system off. The electric parking brake requires 12V power to release; if battery is dead, the parking brake may remain engaged or may not engage. For towing: ALWAYS use a flatbed or dolly with front wheels OFF the ground. The transaxle MUST NOT rotate with the hybrid system off - towing with front wheels down will destroy the transaxle even in Neutral, as the motor/generators cannot be isolated from the drive wheels. Rear wheels can roll freely. Do NOT attempt to flat-tow this vehicle under any circumstances.
