🚨 2024 Toyota Prius: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 Prius uses an electronic monostable shifter on the center console that returns to center position after each shift input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheel chocks are in place
- Turn the power mode to ON by pressing the power button twice without pressing the brake pedal (this activates accessories but not the hybrid system)
- Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
- Push the shift lever forward toward 'D' and hold momentarily, then release—the lever will return to center
- Verify 'N' is displayed on the instrument cluster or center display
- If the shift lever does not respond electronically, locate the shift lock override slot—it is typically a small covered slot near the base of the shifter on the right side
- Remove the small plastic cover using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert the mechanical key (stored in the key fob) or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shift lever forward to release the park pawl mechanism
- The transmission should now be in neutral; verify by attempting to roll the vehicle slightly
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the right side base of the shifter console; exact position may vary slightly by trim
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function. Use the shift lock override slot: remove the small cover near the shifter base, insert the mechanical key or screwdriver into the slot, press down firmly while attempting to move the shifter. If override does not work with zero power, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with dollies under the front wheels—do NOT attempt to tow with rear wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The 2024 Prius is a hybrid with front-wheel drive. If the hybrid system cannot be powered on and neutral cannot be engaged, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed or with front wheels on dollies. Towing with front wheels on the ground will cause severe damage to the electric motor/generator and transaxle. The Prius has no mechanical neutral bypass for towing—electronic neutral is required for any rolling movement under tow.
