The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels if on any incline.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if any battery power remains.
- Locate the shift lock override opening, which is a small slot or hole typically covered by a plastic cap near the shifter base—commonly positioned to the left or front of the shifter lever on the center console.
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver, trim tool, or fingernail.
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly to release the mechanical lock.
- While pressing the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter into Neutral.
- If the shifter will not budge, confirm the override is fully depressed and apply additional downward pressure on the tool while shifting.
