🚨 1996 Toyota RAV4: Emergency Neutral

The 1996 RAV4 came with a manual transmission or a traditional 4-speed automatic (not CVT); the automatic uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a button-release mechanism.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. If the automatic transmission shifter is stuck in Park, locate the shift lock override slot—it is typically a small rectangular slot covered by a removable plastic cap on the shifter console, usually to the right or front of the shifter base.
  3. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool.
  4. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  5. For manual transmission models, depress the clutch pedal (or apply manual override if clutch safety switch is failed) and shift to Neutral directly—no override slot is needed.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot with removable cap near the shifter base on automatic transmission models; exact position varies but typically right or forward of the shifter.
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the shift lock override slot still functions mechanically. Insert screwdriver into override slot, press down, and shift to Neutral. Manual transmission models require no power to shift.
