🚨 2016 Toyota RAV4: Emergency Neutral

The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock for its electronically-controlled CVT hybrid transmission system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Attempt to power up the hybrid system: press the brake pedal and push the Power button—even with a weak 12V battery, the system may allow shifting to Neutral if the high-voltage battery has charge.
  3. If the system does not power up, locate the shift lock override access—it is a small rectangular slot covered by a removable plastic cap, located directly forward of the shifter base in the center console.
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved by towing or pushing at very low speeds.

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the hybrid system will not start. Use the shift lock override: remove the cap, insert a screwdriver into the override slot, press down, and shift to Neutral. The mechanical override works without electrical power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID TOW WARNING: The RAV4 Hybrid must be towed with all four wheels OFF the ground (flatbed only) or with the rear wheels raised if towing rear-first for short distances. Towing with front wheels on the ground while in Neutral can cause severe damage to the hybrid transaxle and electric motors. Consult the owner's manual for specific towing procedures—improper towing will destroy expensive hybrid components.
