🚨 2021 Toyota RAV4: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 RAV4 Hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shift lever with a linear gate (P-R-N-D-B/S).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (if battery has any charge). For hybrid system, press the POWER button twice without brake pedal to reach ACC.
- Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular or circular slot with a plastic cover cap on the LEFT side of the shifter base assembly, near the cupholder side.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade from your key fob to pry off the small plastic cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot and press DOWN firmly while maintaining brake pressure.
- While holding the override down, press the shift lever release button (if applicable) and move the lever from P to N.
- The vehicle can now be rolled or steered with the ignition in ACC (steering lock released).
- If the hybrid system is completely dead and ignition cannot reach ACC, the steering wheel will remain locked—vehicle must be dollied or flatbedded with front wheels off the ground.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the hybrid system will not enter READY mode and the shift interlock cannot be electronically released. Use the mechanical shift lock override slot as described. WARNING: Steering wheel lock will NOT release without at least ACC power—if ignition is completely dead, front wheels must be lifted for towing (flatbed or dollies required). The 2021 RAV4 has an electric parking brake; if EPB is engaged and battery is dead, rear wheels may remain locked—flatbed strongly recommended.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: The RAV4 Hybrid has no traditional neutral coasting—placing in N with the hybrid system OFF does NOT mechanically disconnect the drive motors. NEVER tow with all four wheels on the ground, even in N. Towing more than 50 feet risks severe damage to the hybrid transaxle and electric motors. USE FLATBED ONLY or lift front wheels with tow dollies. If the 12V battery is dead, the high-voltage hybrid system cannot enter tow mode. Do not attempt to flat-tow under any circumstances. The electric parking brake may remain locked if 12V power is lost—flatbed towing is the safest method.
