The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheel chocks are in place
- Locate the shift lock override slot - on console shifters it's typically a small cap-covered slot near the shifter base; on button systems check near the P button
- Remove the small cap or cover by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if any 12V power exists) and shift to N, or on button systems press the N button
- If completely dead with zero 12V power, the shift lock override may not release the transmission to N - you may need to jump-start the 12V battery minimally to power the shifter electronics
- Once in N, release the parking brake and the vehicle can roll
