🚨 1995 Toyota Supra: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 Toyota Supra (A80 chassis) uses a conventional floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a traditional PRNDL gate and mechanical shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. If 12V power is available, turn the ignition key to the ON position (not START).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal, then move the shifter from P to N.
  4. If the shifter is locked in Park with no power or due to a failed brake light switch, locate the shift lock override slot.
  5. The override is a small rectangular or circular slot with a cover, located on the left side of the shifter base assembly.
  6. Pry out the small plastic cover using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
  7. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the slot and push down firmly.
  8. While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N.
  9. Remove the tool and the shifter should remain in neutral.

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the shift lock solenoid will engage by default, preventing movement from Park. Use the mechanical shift lock override on the left side of the shifter. The ignition key does not need to be in any position for the mechanical override to function. Once in neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled freely.
