🚨 2010 Toyota Vitz: Emergency Neutral
The 2010 Vitz (XP90 generation, third-gen, sold 2005-2010 in Japan) uses a traditional floor-mounted console shift lever with a button-release or thumb-press mechanism for P-R-N-D shifting.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is applied
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: look for a small rectangular or round cover/cap near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side or front-left of the shifter gate
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the override cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly (this mechanically disengages the shift-lock solenoid)
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button (or thumb release) and move the lever from P to N
- Release the override once the shifter is in N
- If you need to move the vehicle, release the parking brake and push/roll as needed
Shift-lock override location
The shift-lock override slot is next to the shifter base on the console, under a small removable cap on the left or front side of the shifter gate; exact position varies slightly by trim but it is always within 1-2 inches of the shifter lever base.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter button and shift-lock solenoid will not operate. The mechanical shift-lock override allows you to bypass the solenoid without electrical power. Insert the tool into the override slot, press down, and manually move the lever to N. This works completely independent of battery power.
