🚨 2011 Toyota Vitz: Emergency Neutral
The 2011 Vitz (XP130 generation, fourth-gen, sold 2010-2019 in Japan) uses a floor-mounted console shift lever with a push-button release on the shifter handle for gear changes.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake
- Locate the shift-lock override: on the XP130 Vitz, look for a small cap or cover immediately adjacent to the shifter lever base on the console, usually on the left front side of the shifter gate opening
- Pry off the override cover using a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar flat tool
- Insert the tool into the revealed shift-lock override slot and press down (this mechanically releases the lock pawl)
- While holding the override down, press the button on the shifter handle and move the lever rearward from P to N
- Once in N, remove the tool and replace the cap if desired
- Release the parking brake to allow the vehicle to roll
Shift-lock override location
The shift-lock override slot is located under a small removable cap on the left side of the shifter console gate, directly next to the shifter lever base (within about 1 inch of the lever).
With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead, the shift-lock solenoid and the shifter button interlock will not function electrically. Use the mechanical shift-lock override: press the tool into the override slot to physically release the lock mechanism, then manually move the shifter to N. This procedure does not require any electrical power.
