⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and engage the parking brake
- Locate the shift-lock override access: look for a small rectangular or oval cap near the shifter lever base on the console, typically on the left or left-front edge of the shifter surround
- Remove the cap by prying it gently with a flathead screwdriver or key blade
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the shift-lock override slot underneath the cap and press down firmly
- While holding the override depressed, press the button on the shifter and pull the lever back from P to N
- Once the shifter is in N, release the override tool and remove it
- Ensure the parking brake is released before attempting to move the vehicle
Shift-lock override location
Under a small removable cap located on the left side of the shifter console gate, adjacent to the shifter lever base (approximately 1 inch from the lever).
With zero electrical power
With no 12V battery power, the shift-lock solenoid is inactive and the shifter will be locked in Park. The mechanical shift-lock override bypasses the solenoid entirely: insert the tool, press down to release the mechanical lock, and manually shift to Neutral. No electrical power is needed for this override to function.
