⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock at least one wheel
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if the 12V battery has any charge remaining (the hybrid system does NOT need to be READY)
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override cover on the console near the shifter base (typically to the right side)
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover
- Press firmly down into the override slot with the screwdriver while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, release the override and shifter button, keeping the shifter in Neutral
- Turn ignition off if it was on; the shifter will remain in Neutral

With completely dead 12V battery, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. You do NOT need ignition power or hybrid system READY status to use the override slot. The override mechanically releases the shifter lock so you can move to Neutral. The shifter will stay in Neutral without power.

CRITICAL: Vitz Hybrid uses an electronically controlled hybrid transaxle. Even in Neutral, the transaxle may not mechanically disengage the drive wheels completely if the hybrid system is not powered. For towing, you MUST either: 1) Have the hybrid system in READY mode with Neutral selected and tow with rear wheels off the ground (flatbed strongly preferred), OR 2) Use a flatbed or trailer with all four wheels off the ground. DO NOT flat-tow a Vitz Hybrid with dead battery - severe transaxle damage will occur. Consult the owner's manual towing section for maximum towing distance/speed if hybrid system is operational.
